Power Protection Devices Several devices are available to protect against power fluctuations and failures: A UPS protects against power fluctuations and interruptions. See the UPS manufacturer documentation for information on battery operating time and to ensure that the device is approved by Underwriters Laboratories UL. Do not use a battery from other computers with your computer. The Battery Meter window displays status, charge level, and charge completion time for the battery in your computer. The computer reads your source CD or DVD and copies it to a temporary folder on your computer hard drive. Dell QuickSet, which is automatically installed and enabled on your computer, is necessary for Dell MediaDirect to function. To access the help file, see "Help File" on page 9.
Using the Keyboard and Touch Pad Numeric Keypad numeric keypad The numeric keypad functions like the numeric keypad on an external keyboard. Each key on the keypad has multiple functions. The keypad numbers and symbols are marked in blue on the right of the keypad keys. Ejects the tray out of the drive if Dell QuickSet is installed. To adjust keyboard operation, such as the character repeat rate, open the Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and click Keyboard. See "Contacting Dell" on page The Service Tag for your computer is located at the top of each test screen.
If you contact Dell, technical support will ask for your Service Tag. Function Displays the results of the test and any error conditions encountered. Use an anti-virus program that includes anti-spyware protection your program may require an upgrade to scan the computer and remove spyware. For more information, go to support. Type some characters on the external keyboard and verify that they appear on the display.
If the characters appear now but did not with the external keyboard, you may have a defective external keyboard. You might lose data if you are unable to perform an operating system shutdown. See the Dell Help file for information on standby mode.
If the power light is blinking, the computer is in standby mode—press the power button to exit standby mode. If the battery status light rapidly flashes orange, the battery may be defective. Click Scanners and Cameras. Turn on the computer. Shut down your computer and connect an external monitor to the computer.
Turn on the computer and the monitor and adjust the monitor brightness and contrast controls. If the external monitor works, the computer display or video controller may be defective. A driver acts like a translator between the device and any other programs that use the device. Each device has its own set of specialized commands that only its driver recognizes. Dell ships your computer to you with required drivers already installed—no further installation or configuration is needed.
Before you undo the last system restore, save and close all open files and exit any open programs. Do not alter, open, or delete any files or programs until the system restoration is complete. Only a certified service technician should perform repairs on your computer. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not covered by your warranty. When you disconnect a cable, pull on its connector or on its strain-relief loop, not on the cable itself.
